My name is Haley Hubbell I am a Junior at Mercyhurst College working on my Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Education. I cannot wait to get into the teaching field and get the opportunity to work with children and share my love and dedication to the education field. I want children to come to school and enjoy coming to school and hope to guide children into learning to love education as much as I do.These are my thoughts on including technology in the classroom:
Technology is something that is essential in every classroom, teachers and students will both use massive amounts of technology in their life time. When I first started taking the Technology for Teachers course I expected a boring overview of how the internet and a computer works and what basic programs were about. However, I have really acquired many great teaching tools in this course. Technology is not just a word processor or a search engine, technology includes many great learning tools. Through utilizing technology, children are experiencing a hands on and engaging learning experience.
At the beginning of this class I was excited to learn new technology strategies and learn hands on ways to make the classroom more interesting. After doing this wiki I am overwhelmed and stressed out to my maximum capacity. I have never taken a class that has been so much work load for a final assignment. Between balancing 2 other education classes, one core class, and working 20 hours a week I have never struggled so much with time management. This blog was more work than I have ever done for any final in my three years at Mercyhurst. According to students who have taken this class previously all they had to do for their final was skype. So thank you wikispaces for contributing to my high stress level.
Technology Philosophy
Today's society is a complex technology based environment. By integrating technology into the classroom we are creating an opportunity that will enhance learning and students will create life long learning skills. Integrating technology into classrooms allows the teacher to create an individualized technology plan for all of their students.
In all classrooms children are at different intelligence levels and abilities; technology can create variety and ensure that the needs of all children are met. Using technology can be included in creating a classroom that is technologically interesting and challenging for all. ISTE-NETS-T standard 1 is to facilitate and inspire student learning that connects to creating a creative environment integrating technology. I feel that this is the most important foundation for the classroom. In my classroom I hope that students will connect the learning experiences they are learning and integrate technology. In a classroom with high quality technology students can learn new innovative ways to think, students can be engaged in real-world issues using digital tools. All children learn in different ways it is important that lessons are intriguing to all children. Technology helps make teaching and learning more meaningful and fun. Technology allows for children to freely express their interests in a web tool of their preference. Children can creatively express their interests and passions through technology tools introduced in the class. Children choose the path of a general theme and present the topic in a way that interests and intrigues them. It is important for teachers to assess the amount of interest and discussion the technology tools are they are introducing creates.
How much interest the students convey about technology tools introduced by teachers is a great way of assessing the engagement of the lesson. If students are very interested in a technology tool introduced it is a great way to branch off of other content areas. Children can learn science, math, reading, and writing utilizing technology tools. Technology use in the classroom makes learning more fun and strengthens the learning experiences for the students. Children are more engaged and intrigued by the hands on learning experiences.
I feel that both the teacher and the student will utilize technology to create a technology friendly environment. Incorporating technology in the classroom can be both a learning tool for students and a teaching tool for teachers. Technology should not only be a separate learning area in school it should be included in all learning content (math, science, history, health, and language arts). Technology deepens and enhances the learning process. Children are actively engaged in learning experiences increases their interest level on the subject.Integrating technology into learning experiences allows students to be intellectually challenged. While participating in technology activities students are challenged by the ability to learn and express what they have learned utilizing web tools. Integrating technology and working with peers is a great way to engage students, keep them on task, and reduce behavioral problems in the classroom. When children are working and learning together they are reviewing a lesson and strengthening neurons and brain connections. When children are working together they are more than just learning a concept but teaching it to one another, explaining, it and working together to present the learning concept. Children are working together using more skills than independently working on a concept and in turn are experiencing more meaningful learning experiences. Technology can be used to support the curricular goals in the classroom. Ways that technology can support curriculum goals in the different subject areas are bu sing web tools such as graphic organizers, nonlinear power-points, watching videos, using social network sites, and being actively involved. Integrating technology in the classroom provides each classroom with interesting, diverse, and current learning materials.
When children are included in a technology, specific criteria needs to be included for a beneficial learning experience. A technology based learning environment includes the students being actively engages, participating in groups, frequent interaction and feedback from peers and teachers, and the connection to a real world experience. When students use technology in the classroom they are active participant in technology and students work together in a collaborative and cooperative learning process. Utilizing technology children can creatively enhance their work and learning experiences. When children are actively engaged in a technology rich environment the technology should reinforce the subject areas and the children will be more social, interested and passionate about what they are learning. When children work with web tools the assignments and lessons will show how well the child is engaging with the technology tools. Teachers will visually observe the interest and engagement level of the children while utilizing the technology tools.
Teachers must continually make efforts to bring new ideas into the classroom, try them, and learn from them. Technology is ever changing and can be costly, however it is essential in an everyday curriculum. The ISTE-NETS-T Standard 5: Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership encourages teachers to continue to improve their professional practice and model effective use of digital tools. Teachers should be attending seminars, conferences, and meetings to expand on their knowledge of what technology is available for use in the classroom. Education technology includes communicating with each other online through blogs, interactive smart-boards, education video games, utilizing spread sheets, power-points, and many more teaching tools. In my classroom I will actively research throgh a subscription to a technology blog; I would like to yearly attend an expo or conference on effective ways to integrate technology into the classroom. I feel that is is very important to try new things in the classroom, it is okay if a lesson fails and the teacher feels that changes are necessary. The best teachers try new things, fail, and learn from their failures; you will never know how something will go if you do not try it. A teacher should not be afraid of making mistakes, but afraid of never introducing anything new. Technology offers a powerful learning tools tools that demands new skills, and provides new ways to engage students in a virtual classroom environment. In my opinion technology is an innovative tool that is emerging in classrooms today, allowing teachers and students experiences and opportunities that were never before possible.
The International Society for Technology in Education created performance indicators for teachers called National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). The standard for effective teachers to apply to their students is called National Educational Technology Standards for students (NETS-S) as they design, teacher, and assess the learning experience. Teachers use NETS-S to further their professional development. There is five standards for students: facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity (standard 1), design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments (standard 2), model digital-age work and learning (standard 3), promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility (standard 4), engage in professional growth and leadership (standard 5). Each standard has it’s own sub-stages. I think that the technology standards taught me to be more aware when planning lessons and evaluating children in the classroom. The standards can be used to set the classroom environment actively engaging the children and utilizing technology. Students should be encouraged to express their creativity. Teachers should develop and model a digital-age experiences, assessments, work, and learning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bloom's Taxonomy
Benjamin Bloom created the classification system of learning objectives used within education. The blooming orange is a list of learning objectives that teachers use to create lesson plans. The blooming orange is divided into different classification areas: analyze, evaluate, create, remember, understand, and apply. Each classification area has vocabulary words that fit into that section. For analyze, students compare, explain, examine, categorize, identify, contrast, and investigate. For evaluate, students assess, justify, prioritize, recommend, rate, decide, and choose. For create, students create, invents, plan, compose, construct, design, and imagine. For remember, students describe, name, relate, list, write, find, and tell. For understand, students explain, compare, discuss, predict, restate, translate, and outline. For apply, student’s show complete, use, classify, examine, illustrate, and solve. According to Bloom’s Taxonomy- Inverted the lower order of thinking skills stops with create being the largest, next evaluate, analyze, apply, understand, and remember. Using the blooms taxonomy as a teacher it makes you really think about what concepts you want to integrate into your lesson. It uses subsections to break learning processes into sections allowing teachers to be more planned for there lesson.
